MUST KNOWINFO ABOUT MULCHING

Skid steer mulching is great for moderate foliage overgrowth consisting of brush, hardwoods and softwoods up to 6″ wide at the trunk. Large trees are too heavy and dangerous to drop with a skid steer.

We remove the unwanted vegetation down to slightly above the ground. Mulching is not stump grinding but we try to get stumps pretty low down. We have to stay above the soil a little bit.

Fine-ness of the mulch result is directly proportional to how many times we go back over a plot. Some people would rather a finer material result and are willing to pay for it because it takes longer to get finer chunks.

Property must be relatively level. 20% slope is a practical maximum because at steeper angles side-loading is high enough to de- track the machine.

Property should be clear of tires, rims, soppy mud, creeks, hidden rubbish, junk, fences, steel chunks, abandoned machines, larger rocks, with not a lot of fresh stumps or freshly downed trees (rotten trees are ok). Most people really do not know but this is what I need to avoid because it destroys mulcher knives. It is also best if you know where your property lines are.

We do not mulch within 300 feet of any decent fence per mulcher’s manufacturer warning you need a 300 foot safety zone around their mulcher when operating. I will consider coming within 50ft of your own fence with a waiver relieving me from any damages. Mulchers are dangerous to fences! A skid steer can easily back into one, drop a tree on one, throw heavy logs or chunks at it, or pull strands of barbed wire or vines away damaging them. Mulchers and fences do not mix well!

SOME QUESTIONS I OFTEN GET

Q: Are you going to leave the area mulched ready for seeding?

No, not even close. Forestry mulching is an intermediate land preparation process, not a landscaping service. To get a finished planting area many more steps are required. You will need a thorough raking of the area, possibly two or three. I offer competitive rates for raking. Clearing of mulch debris is scheduled separately.

After raking you WILL need a variety of additional services if you want to achieve a grassy area. You may need stump grinding, root removal, hole filling, drainage planning, bush hogging, possible nutrient and fertilizer application, soil conditioning, seeding, straw application, junk removal and I have even uncovered old wells. I can’t emphasize enough that forestry mulching is a START towards a grassy lawn. You can get the best mulching work on the planet but it will still be far from ready for seeding.

Q: What skid steer do you use?

I run 110hp class skid steers supplying 41 gallon per minute @ 3500 psi. I use or have used a Takeuchi TL12R2 high flow, John Deere 333G high flow, Caterpillar 299D3 Forestry, Bobcat S86 high flow, Kubota SVC97-2 high flow, or an ASV TR-135 high flow. If you are comparison shopping make sure your service man shows up with a 110hp machine equipped with high flow, many run the smaller 75hp machines some without high flow even.

Q: Can you mulch a bamboo forest?

Yes. My experience with bamboo forests is they take more time to mulch. The shoots tend to split in long pieces rather than shred through the machine. I can do it and have removed large bamboo plots before.

Q: Why such a small service area?

At this time we are a 1-man operation with little help so we must remain close to base.

Q: Why do you not offer a by-the-acre rate? Or a day rate?

I do not do by the acre rates because there are so many variables in mulching it would be pointless. Factors are what’s unseen under the brush, how many hardwoods versus soft pines there are, how steep, rocky, stumpy or slippery the ground is, and how large an area is to name some. Rather than upcharge to cover variables I can just charge for the time it takes me to get the actual area mulched. Everyone benefits this way. While I’d love to supply a hard quote up front, it’s not possible to be accurate. As a rule of thumb I shoot for an acre a day, but I have covered as many as 2.5 acres in a day, so guesswork.

Q: Can it be hard to reach you?

I’m sorry but it definitely can. There’s nobody to man the phone but me, and if I am working then nobody. Leave a message and I will get back to you on phone number 706-391-3840, or through texting the same number, through email (gabemorrow@gmail.com) or by Facebook Messenger (Gabe Morrow). I will get back within a few hours or the next business day. Bear in mind there is a MOUNTAIN OF SPAMMING going on these days causing me to accidentally delete some wanted messages.

Q: Why is mulching so darned expensive?

Per the AI query below, the current range is $200-350 (see picture). I am actually pretty low. I discourage renting the mulching equipment to save money because it is a high risk endeavor with many tricks of the trade. Problems will definitely come up which negate savings. The only way I would rent a mulcher is if you are 1. already capable on any skid steer 2. can rent it for several weeks so you can learn to properly run it and 3. you can sharpen the knives yourself.

Q: Will you go the extra mile to make sure our HOA rules, city ordinances for street cleanup, and tracking by skid steer on our property are addressed?

No sorry. Forestry mulching is the gross removal of trees and brush not a residential landscaping service. My bobcat weighs over 16,000 pounds which is about as much as a Caterpillar D3. It leaves tracks, clods of dirt, huge piles of mulch, stumps etc. It damages grass. It is best thought of as a bulldozer. I try and keep prices super low which precludes turn-key service in this regard.
